Last week, Hour Detroit hosted its 3rd annual “Best Dressed” Celebration at one of the city’s historical gems, the Fillmore in Detroit. This fashionable evening was filled with strolling hors d’oeurves, reasonably priced cocktails, and high fashions.
When I first stepped into the lively scene, my sights immediately were drawn to an artist, Tony Roko, who was in the process of painting une oeuvre d’art. Although his work incorporated a blended medley of colors, it was his sitter and inspiration for the painting that caught my attention—a woman with perhaps the most stoic demeanor who remained absolutely still for Roko. Oh and, did I mention she was on stilts? It was certainly hard to avert my eyes from this woman who was towering over the crowd. This eye-catching attraction for incoming guests was definitely one for the books.
As I scoped about the room, I paid close attention to the fashionable details. Many guests showcased their passion for fashion with runway-ready looks while others wore red carpet ball gowns that even Joan Rivers would applaud.
After my photo opp in front of the elaborate wall of red roses, I made a beeline for the strolling appetizers. The eclectic menu of savory finger foods featured flavors for every palate. There were hamburger sliders for those who enjoy American eats and mini taco bites for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike. My favorite was the vegetarian taco bite; it was fresh with hints of cilantro and seasoned corn. The perfect balance for that southwestern flavor! Lastly, there was a dessert tray with cream-filled, chocolate éclairs—delicious!
The grand finale of the evening was of course, the high fashion runway show with looks by Neiman Marcus. As the curtains were drawn, the first model stepped out onto the catwalk with the DJ blasting top 40 hits accompanied by a bongo player backing up each beat and adding a lively twist to each song. The entire show was very entertaining, from the music to the visuals. All of the models sported hairstyles that resembled Cyndi Lauper’s wild, pushed-over-to-the-side ‘do, circa 1985. The fashions touched on all of this season’s latest trends with fur vests, leather leggings, and velvet blazers for the dapper male models. At the conclusion of the show, I didn’t want the night to end. It was a well-attended evening with a vivacious, well-dressed crowd and great food.
Hats off to Hour Detroit!
